I really can't remember when I became interested in flight, airplanes in particular. One early photograph shows me playing with a glass airplane which once contained candy, I must have been 4 or 5 years old.
As a youth I constructed tissue and balsa rubber powered airplanes, some even flew!
After I started teaching art in a public school, I read a book called "The Blonde Knight of Germany" by Raymond F. Toliver, the book is about Erich Hartmann, the highest scoring fighter pilot of all time. That was the spark that started my fire! I personally met Ray and Erich in 1971, and corresponded with them until they passed away.
I named my youngest son after Erich. After reading the book, I decided to construct a full scale model of his ME-109, after that was completed I just kept building more airplanes.
During all this time I have been blessed with an understanding and supporting wife, family and many friends. |
