WW2 Japanese MXY-7 Ohka
The sixth and last airplane that I built was a WW2 Japanese MXY-7 Ohka
( which means cherry blossom), it was also known as the "Baka" which
means fool or stupid. The MXY-7 was a suicide plane, built for only one
mission. The plane was to be released from underneath a Betty bomber, then
the pilot would dive into his target under rocket power. In the nose of the
plane there was a warhead of 2,645 lbs. The wings were made of plywood
and had a metal fuselage. The cockpit contained only the bare minimum of
instruments. The Baka could reach speeds of over 600 mph.
The Baka was a very simple aircraft for me to construct using the same
methods used on other airplanes. It took only one year to construct the plane,
a record time for me. The wings and tail surfaces could be removed for
shipment. It is now on loan to the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center displayed
near the He-162.
